Mysterious Jenolan Caves, symbol of beauty, adventure, and escape.For many years, researchers suspected that Jenolan Caves was extremely old. Recently the CSIRO solved the mystery, establishing that the caves are the world’s oldest known open caves. Once hidden and remote, more than 400 caves have been discovered at Jenolan since 1830. However their full extent remains unknown. Above ground, there are spectacular formations, such as Carlotta’s Arch and the Blue Lake. Underground, with daily guided tours, most visitors can experience any of the nine spectacular show caves with their amazing formations, rivers and pools. If you visit only one cave, the Lucas has the Cathedral Chamber, one of the widest and highest at Jenolan. With famous acoustics, the Cathedral hosts Concerts in the Caves. The Temple of Baal, one of the world's most beautiful caves, offers the 9m long Angel's Wing - one of the world’s largest cave shawls. Explore Jenolan’s mysterious depths with Adventure Caving. AccommodationNestled in a secluded valley in the Upper Blue Mountains, Jenolan Caves House is one of only a few tourism retreats located within a World Heritage area.Heritage-listed Caves House is an imposing Tudor-style building. Built in 1896, it is one of Australia’s few remaining guesthouses of the Victorian era. Designed by NSW Government architect W.L.Vernon, no expense was spared on the original building, characterised by stonework and high gables. Accommodation ranges from the grand historic guesthouse to modern rooms, budget and self-contained options. The self-contained options include the cosy Jenolan Caves Cottages, which are set in bushland and sleep up to 8 each. Caves House features the baronial restaurant, Chisolms, and Trails Bistro with al fresco dining throughout the day. Jenolan a great base from which to experience the area. From Sydney, take the M4 Motorway travelling west through the Blue Mountains, Katoomba and Mt. Victoria on the Great Western Highway. Shortly after Victoria Pass, the Jenolan Caves turnoff is found just past the village of Hartley. Turning left, this road passes through Hampton and finally Jenolan Caves.
