Intriguing 'Off the Track' Tour - Jenolan Caves
Jenolan Caves, NSW.
At Jenolan, it has been estimated that there are around 60km of caves. About 3km are open to the general public as 'show' caves. Some are open for Adventure Caving. Others are open to speleological groups only. And still others fall into the 'off the track' category. These are caves which were part of show cave tours up to the early 1900s, so paths were installed but not lights. As more caves were discovered and more popular cave tours received preference with regard to development, some older sections were gradually closed to public view. When this tour is open, you can put on a miner's lamp and explore these dark pathways, which are no longer on the regular tour schedule. Until you assemble for the Off the Track Tour, you won't know which rarely seen caves you will be taken to. You might go to caves with names like Architects Studio, Lily of the Valley and the Red and White Temples. The Off the Track tour is a very rare tour indeed - organised maybe 2 or 3 times a year - and takes only 20 people. So don't miss this opportunity - make sure you book - on 02 6359 3911.
