Fossicking

Fossicking is a popular and rewarding activity in the Oberon district, with a number of designated fossicking areas accessible to the public.

In 1993 a moratorium was placed over these areas to assess if they should be preserved. This is still in place, so they are recognised fossicking areas not open to exploration or mining leases, public access is limited to a few small areas.

The Visitor Information Centre has experienced staff to assist with directions, hire of equipment. fossicking techniques and examples of precious stones, rocks and minerals which can be found in the area. More details can be obtained from the Department of Mineral Resources and Fossicking licences can be purchased from Forest NSW for fossicking in the state forests.

During drought conditions it is advisable to provide your own water supply as streams may be dry.
