3. The Pine Forests and Mushrooming
It’s autumn and you won’t be able to resist slipping away into one of the local pine forests and collecting some very tasty delicacies for dinner. Mushrooming is a very popular pastime in Oberon, with the forest floor literally dotted with mushrooms. Delicious Slippery Jack and Saffron Milk Cap mushrooms are there for the picking but make sure you hurry!
4. Truffle Hunting
Have you even been truffle hunting? If not, you are in for a treat! Truffles are a very peculiar culinary delight which grow in the soil under trees at the Lowes Mount Truffiere, and you can accompany a specially trained truffle hunting dog each winter on your search for these fickle little black bundles. You can also try some truffle infused products while you are at it and see what all the fuss is all about.
5. Mayfield Garden
If you think you have seen gardens, think again. Mayfield Garden is like nothing you have ever seen before. This truly remarkable garden stretches over hundreds of acres and has a number of amazing features, including a croquet lawn, the water garden and obelisk.
6. Seasonal Festivals
Oberon celebrates its gorgeous seasons with fantastic festivals which have something for everyone. The Oberon and Villages Spring Garden Festival and the Oberon and Villages Summer Festival are chock-a-block full of events and celebrations in Oberon and its corral of villages, including country shows and fairs, open gardens, events and concerts at Jenolan Caves, and farmers markets. 9. The Tablelands Way Oberon Farmers Markets
Bright and early on the first Saturday of each month, the charming grounds at the Anglican Church are a flurry of activity. The Tablelands Way Oberon Farmers Markets are a great time to meet some locals, and stock up on freshly baked breads and pastries, locally grown fruits and vegetables, freshly brewed coffee, as well as art and crafts, homemade jewellery, plants, alpaca products, and clothing and knitwear.
10. Fossicking
Oberon’s pretty rivers and creeks are the perfect place to try fossicking for precious stones. It is a fun activity for the family and you may even find some gold, sapphires, zircons, and occasionally diamonds and smokey quartz. There are some perfect designated fossicking spots in the area, but if you would like to give it a try before heading out on your own, drop into the Oberon Visitor Information Centre and have a practice at the Beginner’s Luck Fossisking Patch. Here you can refine your technique and get some handy tips from their friendly staff.
